Innovia Films Ltd is a major producer of highly differentiated speciality Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films offering products produced using both ‘Bubble’ and ‘Tenter’ manufacturing processes.
The company holds a leading global position in the markets for high performance coated films, tobacco overwrap, labels and security films. Innovia employs over 1200 people worldwide and has production sites in Australia, Belgium, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
The company sells films to brand-owners, end-users and converters across the globe which becomes part of the solution for the tobacco overwrap, packaging or labelling of some of the world’s best known brands across a wide variety of everyday consumer goods.
Recognising the demand within the packaging industry arena for increased shelf life to reduce food waste and for the consumer to see the packaged product, they made significant investment in new technologies.
Stephen Langstaff, Global Business Manager, Packaging explains: “After an intense programme of product development, we have successfully launched Propafilm™ Strata SL, the first of our new range of films for the circular economy. It has been designed to be a standalone mono filmic solution or, to be used in laminate constructions to be ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene films. We are already working on a large number of projects with our customers to allow for future recycling. These include the replacement of foil and PET to produce functional all polyolefin laminates”.
Development has not stopped either: later this year further grades will be added to the range such as an additional Strata grade with increased barrier levels. There’s also a new film family with renewable polypropylene content. The properties of this film will match exactly those of the oil based material. In addition, Innovia are actively researching food compliant recyclate, favouring chemical recycling where they aim to have a supplier agreement in place commencing in 2021.
