Creating a Cornish Icon

Berlin Packaging UK  has brought to life one man’s vision of a beautifully bottled, seasonal spirit using locally foraged botanicals and pristine clean spring water

Lantic Gin is inspired by the coastal vitality of Cornwall and the native botanicals surrounding the distillery.

In 2018, after years of study and experimentation, its owner, Alex Palmer-Samborne, was ready to take the leap – with a bold vision to guide him.

Alex wanted to make a gin that was quite different from any other Cornish Gin, one that was not only made in Cornwall but also inspired by its surroundings. A gin that not only utilised the wild flora and fauna of this iconic English county, but explored the wilder side of gin by making seasonal spirits from locally foraged botanicals and pure Cornish spring water.

The journey began in a Cornish barn with a traditional two-litre copper still, an open mind, and a self-taught process – Alex learned distilling by simply doing it. The idea was to craft a gin that moved away from traditional methods. Each batch handcrafted with painstaking passion and care to capture the seasonal scents and seaside characters – which Alex knows all too well, having grown up in the South-West.

When it came to finding a packaging partner that could supply a bottle as beautiful and charming as the gin itself, Alex chose Berlin Packaging UK.

After countless discussions with various suppliers, the reason why Lantic Gin ultimately decided upon Berlin Packaging UK was its desirable lead times and its technical laboratories which were able to complete the intricacies of the bottle design.

Alex had a particular vision and other suppliers were struggling to bring the concept to life in the way he had envisioned. Michal (Business Sector Director – UK, Food & Beverage) and Ian (NPD – Glass Specialist) at Berlin Packaging UK helped massively with the process and to overcome the technical hurdles that were faced from the beginning.

This Lantic Gin project Included Berlin’s technical expertise in:

  • Glass manufacturing, guiding the customer through the extensive design stages to ensure the final concept was manufacturable
  • Utilising its Innovation Centre and Studio 111 to finalise the design, whilst working in conjunction with Lantic’s own designer at all times
  • Offering the full solution in terms of glass, stopper and capsule

The project was not without its obstacles, one of which was the fill line. Alex felt the product should be filled on the neck and Ian, Berlin’s in-house glass specialist, was able to assist with expert insights into the process and advise him on the technicalities as to why it was not possible for this particular venture. From there, Berlin’s in-house designers bought the vision to life.

The aim of the bespoke bottles was to represent the surrounding area and rugged coastline of the South-West. The striking embossed waves and ripples on the glass bottle are reminiscent of the crystal clear waters of Cornwall, creating a bottle design of the highest standard.

Alex is delighted with the outcome of the finished product. His main objective was achieved and his expectations surpassed with positive feedback continuing to pour in following the bespoke bottle’s launch.
