Plant-based products are stealing the show at the moment, with two special themed days growing in popularity and attracting consumers.
The first, World Plant Milk Day, has seen leading UK vegan and animal organisations ProVeg UK, Plant Based News, Animal Aid, Veganuary and Viva! come together for the first time to promote plant-based alternatives to dairy.
Jimmy Pierson, Director of ProVeg UK, said: “Whether it’s oat, almond, soya or coconut, there are plant milks for every taste, for every cup of tea and every bowl of cereal. World Plant Milk Day aims to widen their availability and further accelerate their popularity.”
The popularity of plant-based alternatives continues to grow, with the global industry set to top $16 billion next year.
Co-Founders of World Plant Milk Day (August 22nd), and the sector’s leading news outlet, Plant Based News, drummed up support in the US by posting video content from vegan celebrities, while ProVeg worked with restaurants across the UK to offer deals and events to make plant milks more accessible for the week of August 21st-28th. The Green Kitchen in St Albans, for example, offered dairy-free milk and cheese tasters, and The Spotless Leopard in Bristol has been offering a free meal on the next visit when customers photograph their meal and share it online, tagging ProVeg UK and The Spotless Leopard with the hashtag #WorldPlantMilkDay.
Meanwhile, after the success of last year’s event, organisers of the second British Herb field day on September 14th lined up a number of presentations on optimisation of biocontrol products, sustainable growing media, AHDB research strategy along with a presentation from Martin Chadwick at the University of Reading on understanding flavour in herbs.
A tour of Tozer Seeds, the event’s sponsor, and several outdoor demonstrations also lined up include developments in robotics for horticulture, sprayer best practise and soil stabilisation.
