Innovia Films Ltd is a major producer of speciality Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films and supplies products to the Packaging and Labelling sector from manufacturing sites in the UK, Belgium, Mexico and Australia. The unacceptable pictures of pollution that we’ve all seen through various media over the last two years have given rise to an unprecedented attack on plastics and in particular packaging. At Innovia this has caused us to take a long hard look at our environmental impact and that of our products and to develop a strategy that fits the environmental demands of the 21st Century. It is easy to forget that packaging is there for a purpose. It is being portrayed as a single use worthless material dismissing the important function that it serves in extending shelf life and reducing food waste. The production of this food has drawn on the Earth’s resources and contributed to significant energy usage and associated carbon emissions. Carbon emissions from packaging are dwarfed by that of food waste. Flexible Packaging and in particular BOPP, due to its high level of functionality, can be the most carbon efficient means of packaging but it currently is produced from fossil fuels which limits further carbon reductions.
Innovia is now introducing a family of renewable polypropylene films under the Encore name. These products are produced from an organic waste source which enables the films to reach cradle to gate carbon neutrality. When suitable food contact compliant polymers become available, Encore will also include post-consumer recycled material. BOPP is a recyclable packaging film when collected and Innovia now have many of our products independently certified to confirm this.
