Looking for a better cold chain solution for shipping of food products? Consider paper-based cold chain packing materials to reduce or eliminate plastic packaging.
To meet growing demand for sustainable cold chain packaging, Ranpak is providing customers with a range of paper-based thermal protection solutions that are also cost-efficient. Ranpak WrapPak® Protector is ideal for food companies shipping products requiring sustained frozen, chilled, and ambient temperature ranges.
Ranpak paper-based packing solutions are curbside recyclable and a more sustainable and cost-effective solution than packing using traditional EPS boxes and other plastic-based materials. “The e-commerce market for food and beverages in Europe has seen a dramatic increase as consumers experienced the convenience of online food ordering during the pandemic,” said Anne de Rouw, Business Development Manager Cold Chain Europe.
“This includes meal kits, grocery deliveries, and specialty foods. In fact, 21 percent of the total food & beverages market is expected to be ordered through e-commerce by 2025. At the same time, consumers are looking for sustainable packing solutions that provide a positive unboxing experience. That’s why Ranpak has placed significant focus on WrapPak® Protector, our paper-based cold chain packing solution, which uses waved paper pads as thermal liners.”
How It Works
Ranpak specialists work with customers to determine ideal configurations for packing of specific products and can also recommend sustainable cool packs such as Recycold phase change material (PCM). Ranpak Packaging Engineering Services maintains a “climate room” to conduct thermal tests and develop customized solutions for customers. WrapPak® paper is uncoated Kraft paper, 100 percent recyclable, renewable and biodegradable, moisture resistant and is manufactured from FSC®-certified materials.
Meat in the Box is a UK based company that delivers fresh meat with next-day deliveries. “WrapPak gives us confidence that our fresh meat will arrive chilled and ready to cook. The machine is simple to operate and gives us complete flexibility in our insulation needs, reducing storage space used. As an added bonus, the biodegradable/recyclable nature of the product helps us to keep our carbon footprint down and is an attractive marketing point. WrapPak really is a first-class solution to our unique requirements,” said Matthew Whitehouse, Managing Director at Meat in the Box.
The packing process is straightforward:
1. Select the right double or triple-wall corrugated box.
2. Use the WrapPak® Protector converter to convert paper into waved pads in the right size with the number of layers required depending on the ambient temperature, the product temperature, and shipping duration.
3. Products are inserted into the lined box with cooling elements added.
4. Optional void fill can be used if there are empty spaces in the packed box.
5. Close the box with tape, and it’s ready to ship!
